Welcome to Project Matrilineal

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to Project Matrilineal and my first blog post, which I am hoping will be one of many to come. I am really excited to launch this cultural platform that has taken a lot of effort to get off the ground. I am currently out here in the desert with the beautiful Santa Ana mountains behind me. The Western region of the U.S. has been home to many indigenous Native American matrilineal societies. Lost in the sands of time, female-centric societies once flourished in continents around the world. These societies have had many positive attributes and have functioned in harmony with nature and the earth. Our platform will aim to provide firsthand exposure to female-centric cultures from around the world through multiple offerings such as blogs, podcasts, indigenous literature, and helpful resources. This platform is meant to be a space for exploring indigenous matrilineal and matriarchal cultures. I believe this knowledge is important for the youth in my generation so that they can gain a better understanding of these female-centric cultures, especially during a time when the roles of women are evolving across social, economic, and political realms.

Historically, the transfer of knowledge in most indigenous cultures has largely been oral and, as a result, not well documented. I have noticed that much of the history, context, and application of their constructs have neither been well understood by nor widely available to the general public. During my own efforts to explore these cultures, I have found that it has been most helpful to speak with the elders in these cultures to get a more accurate and nuanced understanding of the origins and evolution of women’s roles in their societies over time. These conversations have been invaluable, and I hope to bring firsthand perspectives from featured guests through a series of podcasts in the future.

Stay tuned for more on this development.

In the meantime, I hope that everyone finds Project Matrilineal an educational and enriching space to extend their knowledge beyond what is available in the mainstream.

Enjoy!

Gabby
